How to clean up the toxic community

Recommended Posts

Note: This idea would only apply to already current rules... all your doing is expanding the amount of GM's essentially without them being GM's, quit taking things out of context or literally, we don't need the tears here.

Figured I would make this suggestion. Seeing how the GM's likely can't handle the mass amount of players I figured I would suggest that they do something similar to RuneScape and recruit some trustworthy Moderators who would have an ability to mute an account until it could be reviewed by a GM.

I really get sick of the amazing amount of toddlers in the starting areas being racist, sexist, and just plain rude to players. Would be great if there were some players with good judgement who could step in temporarily until a GM could review the situation at a later time.

Might not be like Blizzard, but at least it's a common sense solution that really doesn't take anything away from the core aspects of the game as no one would know who is a moderator, who muted them etc.

Essentially how it would work, certain accounts would have a right click -> mute option which you would have to "confirm" and last for 24 hours, once done it should capture the last 60 seconds of chat so the GM can see why they were muted and decide wither or not time was served by time a GM reviewed it or they should be muted longer/banned.

Not sure if it's an easy thing to implement or monitor but I know it would be really nice to get rid of the racist, sexist idiots swamping the starting zones/barrens, even the Gold Farmer messages  B)

you have to understand that such a system of loosely accountable, decentralized pseudo-staff censoring players at their discretion would be uneconomic

the volunteer staff will have more than enough workload without having to constantly review these infractions and dealing with backlash/appeals and the inevitable rogue moderators

I can only hope you're not actually reporting people for being "toxic" to noone in particular, that would make you the only problem in the situation

While I do hate what a shitfest most of general chat is, where exactly would the line be drawn? Would dark humor be allowed or listed under the racist/sexist/rude tags?

What if I told someone to "get pooped on" (with more vulgarity, of course) after they failed a gank on me? How much banter is allowed? How much insults can you spew at an enemy faction before you get banned? Will I get banned if I unleash the fury of Ragnaros upon my raidmembers if they constantly mess up?

There's obviously a need for some moderation in the chats, but picking out people who can actually spot the difference between memes, good old shittalking and humor and pure text diarrhea is as rare as it goes, especially in the modern vanilla community.

"I really get sick of the amazing amount of toddlers in the starting areas being racist, sexist, and just plain rude to players"

Download superignore and /ignore 'username' them. You have unlimited mounts of people you could ignore and it would save you a lot of trouble.

"Would be great if there were some players with good judgement who could step in temporarily until a GM could review the situation at a later time"

In My experience, this usually leads to bad things happening. A lot of people like to power trip.

"Might not be like Blizzard, but at least it's a common sense solution that really doesn't take anything away from the core aspects of the game as no one would know who is a moderator, who muted them etc."

Thats stupid because morals and offensiveness are completely subjective. The internet is full of trolls, drink some concrete.

I get that its a good idea but its not hard to ignore people. Ignore them, move on and give devs more time to work on important issues rather than controlling a bunch of children who get kicks out of blabbering in the chatbox.

sort of related, is there a proper way of reporting gold sellers?

right now i just put them on ignore, but a report system for gold sellers would be nice thing to have.

Shayss, this really has nothing to do with a thicker skin, I already have one otherwise my guess is I would have quit playing on day one. I know that many players would quit playing however if racist players are ignored. Thanks for the highly intelligent and constructive post, your future is bright.

Torrenz, no just a vague term and reason I said Racism, Sexism specifically, things you would usually get perm banned for on many other games and are already against the rules here. Numerous times I've seen people spamming chat with the N word with low levels and many are complaining but there is nothing anyone can do about it. In no way was suggesting an over-enforcement of chat as some small minded people here with nothing good to say are probably assuming unless they actually are okay with racist to run down the game they enjoy playing and just expect people to "ignore it aka thicker skin". It really doesn't take a rocket scientist to explain the difference between how many people will enjoy the game that isn't full of scum compared to the one that is.

GoForTheMoon, the line is already drawn, it's in the Elysium official rules but lacks a reponse or timely response. You have 15,000 players online at the same time and a handful of GM's, clearly right now for instance they have more important things to do.

Forexal, I have super ignore but I'm the last person to ever ignore players, in fact people tend to ignore me if anything. The ignore list is not an appropriate solution, you're just saying it's okay to be a racist in game if the main solution is to just use the ignore list. Anyone who actually cares about the overall private server community should probably care wither 1 small minded person is worth keeping around over many who would probably quit playing if they had to deal with it on a regular basis. Well that's why GM's would have to use their judgement just like they did when picking GM's and get people who don't power trip and will only take care of the very serious matters or gold spam for instance. Again though, we're talking about rules of the Elysium server that are just not being handled right away, so I don't see how that has any relevance.

Ironsides, Yeah because that makes sense... wanting a faster response time to getting rid of major rule breakers = safe place. Perhaps it's the crybabies coming to this thread with their highly intelligent and constructive post that are spending too much time in their safe places with their coloring books, therapy dogs and juice boxes? I mean if these people had something useful to say I would assume they spent more time in college than their safe places where they missed out on an opportunity to learn something.

Aklol, Dalistar okay?

There's no way you have skin thicker than paper if you actually care about and use the word "toxic" like you do. I bet you voted blue in the election.

Correction, I don't care about the word Toxic... perhaps it was a very poor choice of word to put in the title. I was referring to the racist as toxic however... something that is already against the rules. It only seems to be you that cares about the word Toxic. Yep I did, and if you ever want to debate me on your terrible views on the world let me know, i'll grab my tear mug.

Edit: No worries I've requested to change the title and remove the word "Toxic", it appears to be a very sensitive word for some people.  :upset:

Put the player on /ignore.

Take a screenshot, upload it somewhere, make a GM ticket, include link to screenshot.
