Stress Test #2 — Results & Progress

Recommended Posts

testtwores.jpg

Greetings!

We hope you all enjoyed the second stress test. We wanted to give you a follow-up breakdown of various points of the test, the data, and what we accomplished today. So, let’s get to it!

First of all, we want to address the amount of players that attended. When Nostalrius first began, the max amount of players it had was around 4,000 at launch. With this second stress test, we had 8,000. When players are densely packed together, such as in a starting zone, the lag grows exponentially in the zone. This situation is unique to launching a new realm and does not reflect the behaviors of 1+ month old realms where players are scattered all over Azeroth. In the end, there is no hardware in existence that can completely mitigate this particular form of lag. However, this does bring us to our next subject!

We have developed a new system specifically designed to tackle the rigors of a launch and smooth the experience. All of the various problems such as dense zone population, mob respawns & calculations, view distance, and zoning are taken into account. Testing this system is the primary purpose for these stress tests. The crashes you noticed during the test were all due to this feature which gave us a lot of useful data to improve it.

As we want to make our launch as smooth as humanly possible, we will be having a 3rd and final test to confirm the coming improvements of this system to be production and launch ready. As with the other tests, this one will be this coming weekend — Sunday, December 4th.

We exceeded our expectations with this test in relation to both the amount of players that participated, as well as the success of the server, hardware, and our launch systems. We hope you will grace us one last time by participating in the 3rd stress test this coming weekend. Your efforts will be rewarded with the official release date right after the final stress test ends.

Our Legacy is soon upon us!

I don't think there's a need for such type of explanation or "excuse". Anyone who read your previous announcement knows that we should've spread better this time, but people were still staying in starting zones. World bosses didn't help much because we were amassed in certain areas again, such as Arathi Highlands, Desolace, etc. I'm a bit disappointed by the announcement of third stress test but what can you do. Hopefully the release date will be something like in a week after the third test. Thank you for everything you do.

I didn't take part to the second test, but i agree with the decision concerning a third stress test to make sure everything is ready for a successful launch.

A third test is definitely a good idea, and if need be a fourth should always be considered. A smooth launch is of the utmost concern and the highest priority to secure a huge chunk of players early on, because the numbers will dwindle after a few weeks anyway.

With this outta the way; It was great fun today, even if it was just a pro longed hike through Kalimdor evading bazillion deathtraps.

While thankful for all the work devs put in for a smooth launch I just can't take all this waiting anymore.

And with that said, I'm 100% expecting a surprise next-day-release announcement.

get rid of tests and release the fuc.king servers at once

well then you'll end up with extremely laggy servers. I'd rather do stress tests and wait a while and have a better launch, than rush it and watch it die as people have no patience with bad servers.

I am really excited for this release. I never played vanilla (started at WotLK release.) I didn't really get the chance to play Nost in its prime, and I had more fun in this stress test than I did in the few months I played Legion. Keep up the good work and see you guys next Sunday!

quickest way to a disaster, which you would ironically be complaining about in full i imagine..... entitled child syndrome seems to be as contagious as ever though apparently.

Oh, I dunno.  First server is the existing Nost PvP, so it's going to have far less stress on the starting zones than the fresh PvP server will.  They could probably release the existing PvP and be just fine without more testing.

That having been said, while I'm itching to play again (and I've got a much longer while to wait on my beloved PvE server), I'm perfectly happy with whatever the team decides to do.  I thoroughly enjoyed my experience on Nostalrius and I trust the staff to do what's in the best interest of the servers.  It's a free product that takes far more technical expertise than I'm capable of, so I've got nothing but gratitude, whether it's up next week or next month.

Of course, sooner IS better, because in the mean time, I'm wasting time leveling a priest over at Rebirth, and all that time is going straight down the tubes once the PvE server opens up.

This exactly.  The server can handle these 2 stress tests then releasing the original server will be fine.  They can always patch things on the fly with minimal downtime.

I'm so sick of some unpatient people here and also these "IT Experts".

These guys know what they are doing.

Do u think they make a 3rd Stress Test just for fun?

If u cant wait and need just a rushed anyhow Vanilla Server go for it. There are a lot of them.

So.... And now to the Elysium/Nostalrius-Administration:

I thank u a lot for what u doing and that u try everything to "produce" a good quality Product for us. Well finished, with great quality, thats what made Nostalrius special.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

The hope for Fresh server's release before X-mas is slowly dying...

How so? A third stress test doesn't change anything in terms of the speculation that it would be up by the 3- or 4th week next month.

If anything the official release will probably by as smooth as it can be, which is mandatory for all the hype and media coverage. If this project completely shuts down during the release, Blizzard will have the upper hand.
