Is AUX safe to use?

Recommended Posts

When I played retail I used to love spending hours in the auction house, its kind of like a fun minigame for me.  When I did I used the Auctioneer suite to scan the AH for items that were listed under their value, etc.  For Vanilla it looks like AUX is the go to Auction house tool, and I'm wondering if its ok to use it or if I risk a ban or something.  The terms of service state:

Bots; including, but not limited to, any code, hardware and/or software that allows the automated control of the Game, or any feature or component thereof.

Does this include auction house scanning and mass bidding?  It's unclear where the line is with this because something as simple like a mass mail opener could be considered code that assists in the game.  As far as I know AUX is ok since everyone I know uses it, but I'm having a ton  of fun playing vanilla and don't want to get banned for something silly like this.

no, afaik a lot of ppl are using either aux or auctioneer.

i also dont like addons that make things too easy, but thats what the wow api and addons allowed you to and its too wide spread to shut it down i guess

Why would Aux count as botting?

Lots of addons do things automatically.

You will not get banned for using auction house scanners or mail auto-openers / mass-mailers. Those are addons that have been in the game since retail vanilla and everyone uses them.

I have been using both Aux and Auctioneer for the past few weeks. Works fine (as in retail). Basically I don't think addons will get you banned. Modifying game files will...

Aux and Auctioneer are legal, as long as you do not use them to violate our other rules, ie avoiding AFK. Same thing with TradeDispenser or any other addon.

Edited by Whitekidney:
If you are using any addon or software which automates the gameplay in any way, such as automatic AH scanning and buyouting without your manual input, you will be banned.

Soooo...

Aux can also automatically sort auctions by price, has automatic filters for shown auctions etc, I guess it's a completely illegal addon then?

...Same as LazyPig, which automates selling grey items to vendors, repairing and dismounting.

...Same as basically any addon that does anything, because what addons do is automate some things to make it easier.

This rule sounds extremely vague IMO, could someone clarify this?

I'm a little pissed because I've been using the Aux's autobuy forever, to buy some greens for disenchanting or things with lower than vendor prices. To find out that this addon that everyone uses can be illegal is a bit frustrating. I've always thought that if it's an ingame addon, then it's legal to use.

I have to disagree with that. There are protected and unprotected functions in the LUA API, http://wowwiki.wikia.com/wiki/World_of_Warcraft_API

We should be able to use them as we want to automate stuff as long as they are not protected. Automatic buyout isn't protected for example and we don't need user input to buy an item, if the player opened the AH by interacting with the NPC then we can do whatever we want in the addon...

Anyway, you can't tell if we're automating buyouts as long as we're not buying a sh!tload of stuff within a certain time.

How about postal? That automates stuff aswell and I don't see you having problem with that.

It's also funny because I was told by numerous GMs that real time scan is ok to use, but now you are telling us that it's not. That's rather confusing, isn't it?

It's either all of them or none of them. But that doesn't apply here I guess, bias is real.

I think important text here is manual input. Automating an automated system is what I believe is being specifically referred to here. The use of programs to automate auctioneer including anti afk, specifically. I will check this with whitekidney, regardless.

I feel like you only don't want us to use the AH addons to automatically buyout items. That sounds like the main issue.

There are countless addons that automate stuff for the players and with single each and one of them you first have to manually input something and then it does it for you.

With the AH addon you still have to deal with going AFK yourself, that's not solved by the addon alone.

Thank you, would be nice to get some clarification on that.

The important point here is also that we can't effectively forbid auto-buy even if it was nessessary, because most of the time there's no way to tell if it's being used at all. So what this restriction would do is only prevent good honest players from using it, since they want to follow the rules, but do nothing to prevent people who don't care from using it.

I got banned (then turned into suspension) in about an hour after using auto-buy.

I would like to think there was a good reason for that and not just a coincidence.
