qbradq 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2017 Yesterday I was waxing philosophic - or something like that - to my guildmates about how every time I play Vanilla WoW it makes me want to play Everquest, and how I'd like to be playing Everquest, and about how I would be playing Everquest if the penalties for death were not so unforgiving. So today I thinks to myself, "Self, why don't you play Everquest anymore?" Then I watched this, and I remembered.

I had forgotten that the entire game is unforgiving, not just death penalties. Boats take 30 minutes to run and take you through a whole freaking zone where you can get agro and die. Most classes need a group just to level or farm. The few that can solo can't solo much. Getting a group can be quite tedious. Mobs are on very long respawn timers, even for level 1 junk it's like five minutes. You can't run away from anything. A skunk will chase you to the end of the zone for your delicious blood. And binding a new spawn location requires you to beg for sometimes hours to find a priest. And that's not to say anything about late-game issues. WoW is basically EQ done right.

WoW isn't "EQ done right". They're two completely different games. I prefer WoW over EQ but comparing the two is like apples to oranges.

tensovargas 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2017 There is actually a legacy server on the live servers that have fixed many of the things that made EQ suck. No more huge xp loss on deaths. You still lose some, but it's not that bad. Your gear stays with you when you die, no more naked corpse runs. All bosses and dungeons are instances now.

Oakenlix 79 Report post Posted March 9, 2017 I never played EQ, but i remember Ragnarok Online, where you couldn't ever revert any of your stat/skill point investments, so if you fucked up - your character stays screwed forever, and the whole game was just a huge grindfest. I loved it anyway though, because of a cool atmosphere and because it was my first mmorpg.
metagame 8 Report post Posted March 9, 2017 Ragnarok online was the fucking best. Actually, the community of vanilla WoW pservers reminds me a lot of the Ragnarok community. I still think WoW has the best engine of any classic MMO though, compared to Ragnarok and EQ (which are clunky) playing your character in WoW just feels good.

Yeah, I played official RO back in 2004 or so, then private servers from 2005-2006, and had a blast. But compared to WoW, yes, RO is fucking clunky and unbalanced as all fuck. Everything from class balance to actual combat, was just....primitive, that's the only way to describe it. It worked, but it was extremely clunky and awkward to play. The soundtrack is still godlike, though.
Sevatarion 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2017 Ah, you youngin's. In MY day, we played Ultima Online, where if you died your entire corpse was looted down to the underwear. Where in UO, you could have your house/castle/keep/tower broken into and looted DRY. In MY day, you had 700 skill points to use on whatever you liked, so choose wisely. Where crafting mattered, and the economy was a thing of beauty. In UO, there were no rules. The ultimate sandbox. No rules, no laws, only thing was you couldn't kill an innocent in a city, and even that had its work arounds.
Hurricane2 2 Report post Posted March 10, 2017 Hot damn UO sounds awesome. Reminds a little bit of Diablo HC. I like when there are consequences to dying.
qbradq 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2017 (edited) The difference between being dry-looted in UO and being unable to get your corpse back in EQ is that in UO your equipment was very replaceable. The best you might go out with was player-made platemail, and you'd have several suits stockpiled in the bank. In EQ - as in WoW - your equipment makes your character. Imagine dying in WoW and having to get back to your corpse, but alive and naked. Of course you could beg / pay a necromancer to summon your corpse in EQ, but that could be a huge pain in the ass unless you were in a large guild. Death in EQ could take days to recover from if you weren't well connected. In UO it could take at most an hour or two unless you did something foolish like walk out of town carrying all of your possessions. As soon as you can start raiding Project 1999 EverQuest is horrible. The P1999 server is run by unprofessional people who encourage the uber guilds to monopolize all of the raid content. Also, once you are in your 50's there are only a few places to progress and they are all overcrowded. Many of the best loot dropping mobs are camped 24/7 by poopsocking neckbeards. P1999 stinks. Vanilla WoW truly is a breath of fresh air...
