[GUIDE] Prot Pre-Raid-BiS-List / Specs / Enchants(Updated to patch 1.8)

Recommended Posts

NOTE: AFTER RAGE GAIN WAS FIXED, ALCOR'S (OR ANY OTHER SUPER FAST WEAPON) IS NO LONGER THE BEST TANKING WEAPON. TANKS, YOU WANT IRONFOE INSTEAD. ALCOR IS ONLY GOOD FOR VAEL DUE TO UNLIMITED RAGE.

Due to the re-occuring threads on the forum asking for this I thought I'd compose a list of gear-suggestions for Pre-Raid protection warriors. The items are listed in order of value meaning higher up the list is better. Some items can be moved up and down the lists depending on other gear choices, def-cap etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ENCHANTS:

Recommended enhants for each slot varies depending on play-style, role (MT, OT), speed of weapon, content being done etc but here is what I recommend in each slot:

Head:
- 100hp (Libram of Constitution)
- 1% Dodge (Libram of Protection)

Shoulders:
- 5 all resistances (Require Argent Dawn exalted)
- 5 Fire resistance

Cloak:
- 7 Fire resistance (Depends on content being done).
- 3 agi (Dodge, crit and a tiny bit of armor.
- 70 armor

Chest:
- 100hp
- 3 defence (Core Armor Kit)
- +4 all stats

Bracers:
- 9 stamina
- 3def (enchanting)

Gloves:
- 3 defence (Core Armor Kit)
- 7 agi

Legs:
- 100hp (Libram of Constitution)
- 1% Dodge (Libram of Protection)

Boots:
- 3 def (Core Armor Kit)
- 7 stamina

Weapon 1.3 speed or other dagger:
- Lifestealing (35% proc-chance on 1.3 and averages around 5-10 TPS).
- 15 agi (0,75% crit and 0,75% dodge and a tiny bit of armor. Best over-all enchant).
- 5 damage.
- Crusader (tested this extensively, the uptime is terrible for faster weapons such as Finkles of Alcors and averages a PPM of 0,4. TPS-value approximately and very roughly around 5 TPS.

Weapon 2.0 speed (Or around 2.0):
- Crusader (Around 1 PPM on Quel'Serrar) I'm using this on my Sword.
- 15 agi.
- Lifestealing (Not tested).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BONUS SECTION: AoE Tanking (pre-raid).

Helm:
- Electromagnetic Gigaflux Reactivator (Mekgineer Thermaplugg, Gnomeregan). Great for pulling a large pack and getting some solid initial aggro on them. The use-effect also puts a thorns buff on you that does 5 damage to all attackers for the next 10 minutes (The buff persists even when changing helms).

Cloak:
- Cloak of Flames (BoE).

Gloves:
- Razor Gauntlets (Alzzin the Wildshaper, DM-East).

Ring:
- Naglering (Golem Lord Argelmach, BRD).

Trinket #1:
- Chained Essence of Eranikus (Quest reward, Sunken Temple).
- Ramstein's Lightning Bolts (Ramstein the Gorger, Strat-UD).
- Hand of Justice (Emperor, BRD).

- Force of Will (General Angerforge, BRD)

Trinket #2:
- Mark of the Chosen (Quest reward, Desolace/Maraudon). Basically constant buff of +25 all stats when aoe-tanking large packs.

Weapon:
- Ironfoe (Emperor, BRD). Lifestealing on this one. Proc rate is incredibly high and provides a lot more TPS than Crusader does.
- Thrash Blade (Quest reward, Maraudon). Lifestealing here as well.
- Flurry Axe (BoE). Lifestealing.
- Quel'Serrar (Quest reward, Diremaul book). Crusader or 15agi.

Shield:
- Force Reactive Disk (300 Engineering required to wear). Thorium shield spike.
- Skullflame Shield (BoE). Thorium shield spike.

IMO should not get imo SW or imo taunt. Go 5/5 readiness. Impale is a MT spec and with higher threat comes less need for taunt. Getting 8 more DEF, you can the optimise your gear better on a per fight basis depending on if you need more hit or def. This is when things are on farm and running world buffs.

The impale build does leave alot of room for personal preference, playstyle and different gearing choices. Personaly I too ditched imp SW and taunt in favor of 5/5 anticipation so that I could use Lifegiving gem instead of Onyxia-trinket (I love my oh-фекал-buttons).

Force of Will needs to be one of the AoE tanking trinkets.

For helm, should note that you can get the buff and then swap the item off and not lose the buff.

what is best shield enchant?

7 stamina is your best bet because 2% Block only works against physical damage.

For AoE tanking I get shield with extra block and get block enchant on it, if it's like supression room put shield spike. For single target just stamina shield with stamina enchant.

one noob question:

for pre molten core we need to have 280+ fire resist if i recall correctly. now the problem is: all BIS you listed lack of fire resistance (most of them) so we need to drop the defense cap in favour of fire resistance one? and which is the fire prot cap list?

i am quite confused for pre molten core gear

thanks!

Resist-cap for all schools is 315, you will need 245 FR from gear and the rest from buffs to reach 315. Ragnaros is the hardest boss in terms of FR-capping. He can be tanked with 180+ FR from gear alone with varying success but I would definitely recommend that you try to reach 245 FR from gear. Once you get epic gear such as T1 and T2 they will themselves have some FR on it and you will be able to downscale your FR. I normaly tank rag with 5/8 T2 and the rest is a mix of regular gear and FR gear with FR enchants/rings.

Please note that technically you only really need 2x Tanks with FR gear for MC, rest can go completely without but it helps to have some FR gear on all tanks on fights like Magmadar, Geddon, Trashmobs if only to ease the burder on healers whom have to focus on Melee.

EDIT: Here's a link to the thread that lists FR gear:

When Naglering gets and update will the one I have change with it or will it be pre-buff still?

Every single item ever looted will get updated, not just items looted after patch.

Fellow Warriors, are there no +armor enchants in Vanilla?

Is Max TPS weapon like Finkle dagger basing on HS spam?

Thx B1

There are armor-kits made my LW but those arent used by anyone in vanilla because they are shit. Tanks should enchant stamina, stats, agility or in some cases +3 def armor-kits on their gear. Dagger tanking isnt a thing anymore due to rage-revamp, you are better off with a slow weapon for most fights except for Vaelstrasz.

so my point is correct. for fire resitance ecounters you sacrifice defense in favor of fire resist right?

HI,

How viable is the Darksoul set for pre-raid tanking? Can't find it in your list

It's a good TPS set in of itself but I wouldnt recommend it for pre-raid and early raid-tanking.

From my value sheet:

https://forum.elysium-project.org/topic/22798-tank-points-by-undertanker/

With the set, I have the chest valued over T1, Deathbone, and ZG chest.

With the set, I have the shoulders valued over T1, Stockades, and Draketalons.

With the set, I have the legs valued over T1, Deathbone, Bloodsoaked Leggings.

In short, I'd rock the hell out the 3 set as a new tank until you replace those slots with T2.  If you got blacksmithing for the bonus.

I would Like to try this one day on an alt. I have always just gone with the pre-raid BiS

Please use THIS thread instead. The previous thread was a copy and paste (with minor modifications) of my former Nost thread. (plus I didn't even get credit for it when they took it)

Yeah, Mitycircin seems like a dick in that regard. Also he doesnt post anymore so the lists dont get updated with later patches.

Hey Guys,

I was wondering when exactly the defense-squish happened and when it is expected to happen on Darrowshire. The last thing I've found was:

http://wowwiki.wikia.com/wiki/Patch_1.7.0
"We have determined that the defense statistic was being applied to items too liberally, causing those items to be stronger than they should have been relative to other items of the same level with different effects. As a result, we have reduced the amount of defense points on all items with bonuses to defense by approximately 33% in order to bring those items in line with other similar items."

Did this change happen on Nost at the moment they've released ZG? I'm just a bit confused because a lot of people tend to think that this will happen once BWL is released. (nvm. seems like they've applied some 'punctual' corrections with 1.6.)

Another thing that I was wondering about, what do you guys think of using the Boots of Valor + Bracers of Valor combination, considering these 2 Items are the only D1 pieces you are using. 200 Armor seems like a nice bonus if you can't get your hands on the Fel Hardened (WL-Summ) Bracers and the Boots of Avoidence. How would you rank this, especially in comparison to the Vigorsteel/Golem-Bracers.

Personally I would use Fel-Hardeneed > Golem > Valor. (At least until Heroism), Boots I would use Avoidance > Cannon Master > Valor. (Until Heroism).

The set bonus is nice yes, but to me it makes little difference when Def/Stam is my top Prio on stats. (Block/Parry/Dodge is nice too)
