will special characters be allowed in names?

Recommended Posts

Trying to /target a name with a special character in a BG is impossible sometimes. Forget about reporting these players, it's like a free pass for them to cheat.

OH LORD......

Please folks if you gona use funny letters in your names put it at the end of your name and not the start.

It is so damn hard to send mail to people who have dodgy names ;(

At least we agree on something @ the mail comment. I forgot how annoying that was.

I did find some irritation myself dealing with those characters, because on mac it's a series of keystrokes to find the alt characters and not a number sequence like windows uses.

Wait, you play on a Mac?

I vote no. Only A-Z should be allowed, no exceptions.

I personally don't like the use of special characters so agree with this Xykaru here

Special chars are so obnoxious. You can't who, whisper, add, report, refer, just no.

You can right-click on their name. Several addons add the functionality of copy&pasting text from the client. You can always include a screenshot to your GM ticket as well.

Agreed. Everyone should be encouraged to be creative within the existing framework. It is not difficult and would benefit everyone.

It's objectively more difficult for the entire population when you are unable to see a name and refer to a friend easily "Invite... uh ummm..I can't figure out how to type their name... uhh.. it has.. nevermind let's get someone else." Or if you want to message that really good tank from yesterday but you forget that he had a tiny lil accent on one of the first letters of his name so you're SoL now.

But okay - if it goes through that we have symbols and you're someone who loves symbols, fine - PLEASE DON'T USE IT ON THE FIRST LETTER. Auto-complete was the only way I could figure how to message some people. Seems like shooting yourself in the foot if you choose to have symbols. Then again, I remember when people on PvP realms roleplayed and would report "bad names" for breaking immersion, so I may be biased in my desire to have more real names out there anyway.

In the years I've been playing (retail vanilla through wotlk / multiple private servers) I can count on one hand how many times I've seen people really exploit special characters.  I can see how it can be an annoyance if but it's never stopped me from whispering or adding a person to a group, sending mail.  I've never reported anyone, but as Pottu said, there are ways to do so if you need to. I think it should be allowed, in an open world game, the more options the better.

I do want the true vanilla experience, and I can't remember if it was allowed by Blizzard back in the day, but I'd be happy with going with whatever they went with back then.

I'm sure they can be allowed without much hassle. Like Pottu said, there's way to report those who wish to exploit these names.

It's been my experience that even the use of special characters deters reports and allows for people to pose as other players. There is no specific solution if it is allowed, but mine would be that every character in the name has to have an inflection. There is no purpose outside of intentional deterrence in having your moniker searched/reported.

Just to clarify what I meant with my previous post, this is what it looks like when a player with chinese letters in his name whispers you in chinese:

299gId.png

if you shift click between the brackets then you still won't know his name, only his class & level. if you try to shift click to put it in a chat window you will also get nothing.

Is this what Elysium & Pottu wants?

I agree Russian and Chinese characters should be banned. Ignoring/blocking people is not as easy in vanilla so we need more control over what characters are allowed. But different versions of English characters like é should be fine.

I honestly don't see why we should have to use addons to make it possible to contact certain people or invite them to a group just because they chose to add a secret Alt+548 for the character 'é' in their name. (I doubt that's the proper conbination, just an example for concept).

I never liked it in Vanilla, I doubt I'll like it in Vanilla again.

Edit: Why would we have to contact a GM with a screenshot if it's allowed?

Edit 2: ^^ Assuming that we just contact GM's with a screenshot with a player we previous saw as ƒáñÑ or even ╓fε◘3 so they can take time out of their day to find them and invite them to our party or message them?  I'd remember Fann. Or... pfeoe? Or whatever........ ^ is, but not Alt + 6466 Alt+6468 Alt+ 21858 Alt+5474 as a name. Sure we could add them as a friend, but you know we can only add so many people. Sometimes remembering their name is enough, but not in this situation.

Pottu was referring to someone's question about the difficulty of reporting someone who had accents in their name, not reporting someone because they had accents in their name.

I'm not talking about reporting people because of their accented names. I'm talking about the difficulty of sending them a message, inviting them to a party, and reporting them for behavior.

Can we get a list of addons we need to properly play on this server?

You don't actually have to interact with them at all, Banezilla and Xykaru. There will be more than enough players on all three realms that you won't be desperate to invite Gandálfö for your Zul'Farrak run.

Are you actually promoting non-interaction between the different server groups that will form? Western and asian players, that is. Because the same sentiment with Gandálfö  applies to the nihaobrother whose name you cannot even see without installing an extra full unicode font package into your game client.

It will happen regardless. You will probably not be playing at the same time as XiaoWhan and Xioashin either so you probably shouldn't really care about it.

Don't get me wrong though. I want a general server language aswell, I just don't see them implementing anything to force the issue.

Nonsense because we will not allow Cyrillic or Chinese alphabet to be used for character/guild names. Just like it was on Nostalrius. During the tests we did not have that limitation in place, just like we didn't have anti-cheat on.
