why are hunter pets so garbage

Compared to warlock pets they are just trash lol

lower dmg, not as much utility, and just everything is literally inferior...they are only good to feed enemy procs.  no wonder ~11 years later they gave hunters a talent called "lone wolf" since the pets are just as bad on retail as in here. the only bracket they are good at is 19 or 29 where a twink hunter pet actually does some decent damage because casters dont have their absorb spells yet and well...bite actually does some ok dmg. By lvl 35 or so its greatly diminished

inb4 some mongoloid storms in and says "eeeeee my pet solos instances whoopty fkindoo" . no i dont care about your pet soloing pve dungeons

A level 60 BM spec pet can solo a level 60 caster. I used to send a stealthed cat in to kill a caster all the time in AV.

you are only allowed to use your pet. i have both horde and ally characters in their mid 40s and 30s. 

you will bring your lvl 60 BM hunter , where you are NOT allowed to use your bow. I will bring my lvl 30ish friend who will be allowed to use his bow. we will see if you can solo a lvl 40 caster before my lvl 30ish friend kills you. sounds like a plan?

Hunter pets have uses besides dealing damage too. They're your support - they tank for you, they can stealth and surprise someone who ain't expecting it, they add to caster pushback, some can deal magic damage, keep rogues in combat, help lock down a base... and they do deal decent damage. Just don't be overly reliant on them. You're the hunter, after all. Your pet is a pet. Assistance. Support.

Hunters and their pets in vanilla are most certainly not without their issues. Many of those issues were addressed in some form in BC to a degree.

Keep in mind, that in vanilla, some of the Hunters pets shortcomings were (IMO) meant to be counterbalanced with the taming of 'unique' pets. Sure our pets have lower sheet (base) dps than some warlock pets (not accounting for claw/bite) but getting a pet that deals shadow damage and bypasses armor makes up for that BIG time.

And it may be expensive in training points to give your pet high elemental resists, but taming a wolf that comes with 100 to every resist innately is a huge boost that can alleviate that issue. The problem in my eyes is that they abandoned making taming rare pets meaningful. Instead choosing to nerf all the unique pets from the game while giving nothing in return until BC.

Its still a great class though.

- You can move in between shots without dps loss with a bit of practice (lot of practice). Casters can't move AT ALL without dps loss, they have to spam those bolts.

- We got feign death as a cast cancelling move, scatter shot, trap, detterrence, a lot of dodge/parry mitigation and fuckton of hp with right gear, thats falls into defensive feats category. 

- If you want wotlk level of "efficiency" then go play wotlk? 

That being said pet is not for DPS per se. Sure you bring it to raids to add SOME dps. In PvP ur pet is for controlling status effect aka getting some people in combat so they can't re-drink/eat, enter stealth, charge you. On bgs in base chase scenarios you can send pet on ur target (hunter with aspect of the beast / untrackable) to have a raw estimate where the guy is hiding cause pet will know :) 

Stop considering pet a dps tool and u'll find peace. Its utility. You can take different pets for different utility, BT is pushback machine vs casters, boar is nice root to help you kite, scorpid can create shit poison buffer for your viper sting vs classes than can cleanse/abolish/cure. So as you see different pets open up a different line of play vs different opponents.
